Freedom of Speech & Press

A free society depends on the ability of journalists, citizens, and institutions to criticize those in power without fear of retaliation. Government efforts—direct or indirect—to intimidate, delegitimize, or punish lawful expression are incompatible with constitutional democracy.

Letter To Congress

Subject: Defend Free Speech Publicly—or Risk Its Erosion

Dear [Representative/Senator] [Last Name],

I am writing to urge you to take a clear and public stand in defense of freedom of speech and the independence of the press.

A free society depends on the ability of journalists, citizens, and institutions to criticize those in power without fear of retaliation. Government efforts—direct or indirect—to intimidate, delegitimize, or punish lawful expression are incompatible with constitutional democracy.

History shows that free speech rarely disappears all at once. It erodes when leaders fail to defend it.

I ask that you:

  • Publicly oppose any government action that chills lawful speech or press activity
  • Defend the constitutional role of journalists, including those critical of power
  • Make clear that retaliation against speech is unacceptable, regardless of who is targeted

As a voter, I view the defense of free expression as a basic qualification for public office. Your willingness to defend it openly will factor into how I evaluate your leadership and my future vote.

Speech is not a threat to democracy. Suppressing it is.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]

“Hi, my name is [Name], calling from [City, ZIP]. I’m calling to urge [Representative/Senator] to take a clear, public stand in defense of freedom of speech and a free press.

Journalists and citizens must be able to criticize those in power without fear of retaliation. When leaders fail to defend free expression, it begins to erode.

I’d like to know whether [Representative/Senator] has publicly opposed efforts to intimidate or punish lawful speech.

This is a fundamental qualification for public office, and it matters to me as a voter. Thank you for your time.”
